'A soft place to land' - Open Edition #1
‘A soft place to land’ - is my first open edition sculpture work. It’s a physical and symbolic anchor for those who intentionally want to honour rest and relaxation, especially in the form of naps and time spent in bed.
This ceramic sculpture is approximately 5.7cm (D) x 4cm (W) x 1.8cm (H) and was created with earthenware clay, glazed with a peachy and light pink gloss glaze. Each piece is also imprinted with my makers mark.
What is the difference between an open edition mini sculpture and a one-of one sculpture? When I first began selling my artwork, I made only one-of-one original pieces. As demand grew for my work, so did the price of the sculptures, especially to reflect the time and skill that is needed to complete the works. As an artist who also believes in accessibility, I began to introduce limited edition works, and now, open edition works to sit alongside my original, one-of-one pieces. While each limited and open edition piece is painted with brush on glaze individually and carefully, I am able to use techniques like slip casting to repeat the same sculpture, significantly reducing the time it takes to make a single one-of-one sculpture, which also reduces the cost and access to entry for collecting my works. Open edition works have no limit, and are unnumbered unlike limited edition works, and one-of-one pieces which come with a certificate of authenticity and a promise that only one will ever exist. Open editions will be restocked (however, I won’t live forever and I may choose to retire the work, so that’s within reason!)
